The Highway Code puts the duty on the following driver to leave enough room to stop safely. If they drove into the back of you, they were either too close or not paying attention — which is why insurers accept liability on the vast majority of rear-end claims almost automatically.

The other driver says I 'braked too suddenly' — does that change anything?
Rarely. Drivers are expected to anticipate that traffic ahead may brake sharply — for a pedestrian, a light, a cat. Unless you reversed into them or your brake lights weren't working, liability almost always stays with the driver who hit you. Send us the details and we'll tell you where you stand.
There's barely a mark on my car — is it still worth reporting?
Yes. Modern bumpers hide crumpled crash bars, cracked sensors and boot-floor damage behind a clean-looking panel, and whiplash injuries appear even in low-speed shunts. A two-minute call now protects you if something surfaces later.
My neck and back are sore since the shunt — what should I do?
