First: get safe on the motorway
If you can, steer onto the hard shoulder and stop as far left as possible, wheels turned left. Hazards on. Get everyone out through the left-hand doors and behind the barrier, well away from the traffic — never stand between your car and the carriageway. If anyone is injured or the vehicles are blocking live lanes, call 999 first.
The M1 carries the heaviest traffic in Northern Ireland — Belfast to Lisburn is bumper-to-bumper at peak times, and the Sprucefield, Moira and Lurgan junctions all see regular collisions. Whatever happened, don't try to limp a damaged car home along it.

Only if it's genuinely safe: no leaking fluids, no rubbing bodywork, lights intact, no airbag deployment. If in doubt, don't — pull off at the next junction and call us on 02890 024 744. Recovery costs you nothing on a non-fault claim, and driving a damaged car can void your insurance.
