Get safe on a fast dual carriageway
The A1 between Sprucefield and the border is a high-speed dual carriageway with flush junctions and heavy freight — treat it like a motorway. Get onto the verge or into a junction mouth, hazards on, everyone behind the barrier or well off the road. Injuries or blocked lanes: 999 first.
The junctions at Hillsborough, Dromore, Banbridge and Loughbrickland, and the roundabouts around Newry, are the usual collision points — along with the merge where the M1 becomes the A1 at Sprucefield.

The driver who hit me is from the Republic — does my claim get harder?
It gets different, not harder — for us, anyway. We deal with ROI insurers regularly and have a dedicated ROI line (01 263 5511). You'll notice no difference: same free recovery, same replacement car, same managed claim.
I crashed at one of the A1 flush junctions — who's usually at fault?
Turning traffic crossing the carriageway must give way to through traffic, so liability often sits with the turning vehicle — but every case turns on its facts. Send us photos and we'll give you a straight answer before you commit to anything.
Can you recover me from the border itself?
